While the Department of Social Services (DSS) is an important place to start for all of these needs, it is important to remember that everything is a process and takes time. Though we may be excited and in a hurry because we are free again, we are not the only ones with needs. Along with others, patience is a tool we have to master to get our needs met.
Some strategies for getting the most out of the time you invest in obtaining and managing these services:
- Have your documents and notes in hand and as organized as you can make them.
- Write down your questions and then write down the information you receive.
- Write down the name and phone number of each person that assists you. Ask if you can contact them directly if you have questions after you leave.
- Be clear about your next steps before you leave.
