Tips: Social services offices and benefits

While the Department of Social Services (DSS) is an important place to start for all of these needs, it is important to remember that everything is a process and takes time. Though we may be excited and in a hurry because we are free again, we are not the only ones with needs.  Along with others, patience is a tool we have to master to get our needs met.

Some strategies for getting the most out of the time you invest in obtaining and managing these services:

  • Have your documents and notes in hand and as organized as you can make them.
  • Write down your questions and then write down the information you receive.
  • Write down the name and phone number of each person that assists you.  Ask if you can contact them directly if you have questions after you leave.
  • Be clear about your next steps before you leave.
