For Seniors

Information and services specific to basic needs relevant to seniors such as food, employment, transportation and housing are listed below.  For a list of all county-sponsored services for seniors go to this Directory of Services, Rights & Benefits for Senior Citizens and The Guide to Financial Benefits and Savings.

HOUSING

To get started the Senior Housing Glossary provides housing terms that will help you the different types of communities available. The Guide to Westchester Senior Housing Sites or Sitios de Vivienda para Personas Mayores in Westchester is where you will find a list of senior apartment buildings by community along with some information on housing assistance.  Additionally, Westchester Residential Opportunities (WRO) publishes an annual guide that identifies subsidized rental apartments.

If you are already in a home but need some help with heating costs Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a federally funded program administered by the Westchester County Department of Social Services that assists eligible low-income, elderly and disabled residents with home heating costs. Also, by looking at this Home Repair Energy Assistance Directory  booklet, prepared by Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services, you can see information specific to eligible county residents age 60+ about how to save money on home repair and by using assistance programs.

EMPLOYMENT

The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) offers services to persons age 55 and over. Mature job seekers learn new skills, update current skills, and obtain skills to find a job. Training programs include computer, customer service, home health aide, work experience in food services, clerical and office skills. Free individual counseling, resume preparation and job referrals are available. TRANSPORTATION

For Westchester County Seniors who use the Bee-Line Bus service, take a look at this brochure also available in spanish that shares information MetroCard discounts, bus schedules, available accommodations and much more.

Keep a look out for a Senior Be Educated About Transit program most commonly known as Seniors B.E.A.T offered at senior centers, clubs, libraries, houses of worship and other locations by a representative from the Westchester County Department of Public Works and Transportation. This program is transit orientation program that instructs Westchester seniors on how to safely and successfully use the Bee-Line System to promote greater travel independence.

Did you know that if you are 65 years are older you pay $ 1.35 a ride on the Bee-Line Bus? Visit this link to look at frequently asked questions as well as information such as bus schedules. As a senior you not only get discounts on your MetroCard but also at participating local attractions follow the Ride with a Friend brochure for a list.

RideConnect is a volunteer service available in Mount Kisco, Katonah, Lewisboro, North Salem, North Castle, Pound Ridge and Somers, which will pick up & drop off clients age 60+ with prearranged appointment. Examples of rides include the library, beauty parlor or doctors appointment. Clients must be cognitively and physically sound. This is not a same day service or taxi service. Appointments must be made in advance and no ride is guaranteed. Call 914.864.0955 to find a ride.

FOOD

The Nutrition Program provides meals and services for adults, 60 years and older. Meals are provided at group dining centers and by home delivery throughout Westchester County. Meals are available five or more days per week at approved nutrition sites and multipurpose centers and to medically-eligible home-bound seniors who are unable to participate at congregate sites. Visit the nutrition program page to learn about other services being offered such as nutrition counseling and various social and educational activities.

For both congregate and home-delivered meals a small suggested monetary contribution is appreciated but contributing is voluntary – you will not be denied lunch due to inability or unwillingness to contribute. All contributions are required to go directly back to the nutrition program. All seniors can participate in the meal program regardless of income.
