How can I get my own apartment? I am having an issue with my landlord, where do I go for help? Where can I find temporary or emergency shelter for myself or my family?
Most placement in Temporary Housing – Shelters is coordinated by the Westchester County Department of Social Services (DSS). You must visit a DSS office to apply for shelter. Support for those in reentry is coordinated at the DSS office at 85 Court Street in White Plains. Locations to which you can apply for housing directly are listed below under Temporary Housing – Shelters.
For those with a substance abuse history, see Temporary Housing – Halfway Houses.
There is a Westchester Eviction Prevention Hotline. Are you having trouble paying your rent? Is your Landlord hassling you? Concerned about your rights as a tenant? Worried about your housing? Are you being evicted? Legal Services of Hudson Valley provides FREE legal assistance. Call (914) 468-2175.
Look at the links under Permanent Housing to get information about available rentals and vacancy listings throughout Westchester. These agencies can also help you apply for Section 8 and subsidized rental housing, as well as help you prevent eviction.
Drop-in Centers are for single individuals seeking shelter from the heat or cold when they are open. Counselors may also be available to connect you to needed services.
Families seeking shelter after business hours or on weekends should contact DSS Emergency Services at (914) 995-2099.
