The Department of Social Services (DSS) can address immediate financial and social needs – from temporary to permanent housing, clothing, food stamps, financial assistance, healthcare, securing identification, etc. DSS coordinates all placement into temporary housing.
If you began your application for services while in the County jail or through the support of the Westchester Reentry Task Force, you must go to the DSS office in White Plains (85 Court Street) to confirm your need for services.
Generally, to get cash assistance, you will need to complete an application for temporary assistance with your local DSS office. An interview is required and a decision will be made within 30 days from the date you file your application. If you indicate that you have an emergency, a decision will be made on the day of your interview.
There are four offices in Westchester County; they are in Mount Vernon, Peekskill, White Plains, and Yonkers. The one you need to go to will be based on your town and zip code.
